Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling in Maine

Maine’s solid waste disposal system is a patchwork quilt built from the ground-up.  This system consists of public and private municipal and regional landfills, waste-to-energy incinerators, solid waste processing and recycling facilities, organics management operations, and your local transfer station.  All of these entities must respond to market swings worldwide, nationally, and within the system as well as to State and federal laws and regulations.

But why has solid waste been in the news lately?  Problems with crashing recycling markets are just one part of the story. The recent closure of Coastal Resources of Maine’s Fiberight anaerobic digester in Hampden has diverted municipal solid waste from 115 municipalities to the Waste Management Crossroads landfill in Norridgewock and to the PERC waste-to-energy facility in Orrington. The municipal solid waste system is still trying to reach equilibrium absorbing waste that formerly had been handled at the now-closed MERC waste-to-energy facility in Biddeford. And the State is encouraging and funding waste diversion projects to increase recycling and composting infrastructure.

Attend “E2Tech Talks Trash,” and learn what happens after you set that bag at the curb.  Speakers will describe the various elements of the solid waste system and challenges in Maine and will discuss the policy directions and technologies that affect them now and in the future. Ample time for Q&A will be provided.
