According to an August 30, 2009 report by the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), Maine’s clean energy industry already includes more than 2,500 businesses.
NRCM, an E2Tech member, found that 289 Maine businesses have worked on five wind power projects with total in-state contract spending of more than $50 million. In addition, 230 businesses provide home energy audits and weatherization services, 427 businesses are certified installers of solar hot water and photovoltaic systems, 1,300 businesses provide efficiency products and services, 46 businesses construct and certify high-efficiency homes in Maine, and more than 300other companies are green architecture, engineering and energy consulting firms. More than 75 percent of Maine’s energy efficiency businesses anticipate that business will remain at its current level or grow during the year ahead, according to the NRCM report.
“The clean energy economy is not a theoretical concept in Maine. It is here today, and it is growing. Diverse Maine companies across the state are involved, and we’re starting to develop a critical mass of expertise and momentum that could provide very substantial economic benefits to Maine in future years,” Dylan Voorhees, NRCM’s Clean Energy Project Director, said in a written announcement of the study. Mr. Voorhees was one of four panelists who discussed “Maine’s Energy Future” at the September 24. 2009 E2Tech panel.
